A brief conversation between a dog and me

February 20, 2018

Tompkins Squark Park, Lower East side

late afternoon

A man approaches two friends who sit on a park bench with their aging black lab. They make small talk, the man and the friends.

“She was never that fat,” the man says at one point, talking about the lab.

I look at her, she looks back at me.

“You’re not fat,” I say, telepathically. “Fat isn’t real, it’s a social construct humans made up. You, however, are above and far beyond that rude man.”

She thanks me, telepathically.

“I know,” she says.
